ZenZone Psychiatry – About the Provider
Meet May Akalemeaku, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. My path to mental health care is rooted in decades of service, compassion, and commitment to helping individuals thrive. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, I spent 24 years as a special education teacher supporting students with learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, and complex behavioral needs. Those years shaped my approach to care—teaching me patience, empathy, and the importance of understanding the whole person, not just their diagnosis.
I later transitioned into nursing, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and ultimately my Master of Science in Nursing, specializing in Psychiatric Mental Health. I am currently advancing my education further as a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student at Walden University.
My clinical experience spans outpatient psychiatric settings where I have cared for individuals facing depression, anxiety, psychosis, trauma, and crisis-level needs. As a psychiatric nurse and now a board-certified PMHNP, I provide evidence-based, compassionate care across the lifespan.
As a PMHNP Provider, I conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, diagnose mental health disorders, and develop individualized treatment plans. I prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, offer supportive therapy and psychoeducation, and collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care. My role also includes educating patients and families to foster understanding, empowerment, and active involvement in their wellness journey.
At Zenzone Psychiatry, my mission is simple: to make mental health care safe, accessible, and personalized. I combine clinical expertise with the decades of insight gained from working with diverse individuals and families. Together, we will build a treatment plan that supports your healing, strengthens your resilience, and promotes long-term well-being.
